What’s Holding You Back?

Is negativity holding you back?

The last time I found myself in a rut was not so long ago. It happens to everyone from time to time. So how do people get out of their rut?

They don’t let their own negative thinking hold them back. Everyone gets down sometimes, we can’t always be pumping out positivity, but it is how we handle those negative moments which can make all the difference.

Life throws us curve balls all the time, and when it does, we have a very clear choice. We can get all depressed and negative or we can make a choice to overcome the boundaries and find the positives in our situation.

For example, you might be stuck in a dead end job. Your boss might be super hard to get along with. You might be having issues with a relationship, or you just might have an aggressive neighbour.

Here are three questions to ask yourself to help refocus your state of mind.

  • Can I see the situation from another perspective? i.e. from someone else’s point of view.
  • How do I feel when I think about the negative moments in the situation? i.e. the effect on me, the fear which comes from the unknown outcome.
  • How do I feel when I focus on something totally unrelated? i.e., get over it, stop fixating on it, you can’t change it.

There are always two side to any situation, can you empathise with the cause of your issues?

Does focussing on the bad stuff really help you overcome your anger, frustration or depression? Does it fix the problem?

Like a child who is having a tantrum, we can refocus our thoughts. For those of you with children, do you recall what you did when your 2 year old had a tantrum. You know, the moments you just could not reason with them. The times when all rational thinking had gone out the window & emotions had taken over your child totally. Do you recall that the best remedy was often to divert their attention elsewhere.

Well when I find myself totally fixating on someone or something who had wronged me, or I find life is feeling rather ‘rutish’ and I feel negativity creeping in, I find diverting my focus can be a great option.

They always say that a change is as good as a holiday, well set a goal, focus and don’t let your negativity hold you back.
